Told You So

O.K., so I don't mind saying "I told you so." Our Heard on the Street column reported on February 11th that Britt Cobb was the name being mentioned to be Governor Perdue's new Chief of Staff.

Cobb is a seasoned leader and knows his way around state government, having served under former Ag Commissioner Jim Graham, as Commisioner of Agriculture himself, and as Secretary of Administration for both Governors Easley and Perdue. He is even-handed, level-headed, and extremely capable.

There are only two reservations we have why this might not be a great marriage. The first is that Cobb is such a nice guy. The Chief of Staff sometimes has to knock heads and play hardball with outsiders to accomplish the Governor's agenda. Can Cobb be the bad guy when needed?

The second, and perhaps more compelling reservation is the reputation Bev Perdue has earned for being a tough person for whom to work. No doubt Cobb's level-headed approach will be a good baffle to Perdue's sometimes loud approach, but can Britt stand up to Bev when he needs to do so? Will she listen to him? And if not, how long will Britt last?

If Perdue is to be a two-term Governor she needs better advisors and needs to listen to them. Britt Cobb is certainly a great step in that direction.
